Project Brief<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Key elements of the brief included a family gathering area, a formal dining room, and the transformation of a third space that they weren’t yet sure how to use. This third area, with access to a back door, needed practical storage for coats and boots, while also incorporating a lively social element, as it was connected to the dining room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tom Howley Designer, Sandra Tabet notes, \u201cWe undertook a refurbishment rather than an extension on this property.\u201d While the original space featured a generous layout, bi-fold doors, and separate ancillary areas, it lacked direction, functionality, and cohesion. \u201cWe started by leveraging existing architectural features to enhance the overall design,\u201d Sandra adds. \u201cThe skylights in the ceiling were maintained to maximise natural light, while the existing beams and walls were preserved to visually separate different areas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sandra explains, \u201cWorking closely with our client, we honed in on their specific needs and aesthetic preferences. They were particularly keen on incorporating sophisticated dark colours and rich materials, and their favourite wallpaper became a key design inspiration.\u201d This collaborative approach was essential in realising their vision, with focused consultations ensuring every detail aligned with their desires.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201c<\/span>When I first entered the space, the architectural elements were already in place – beams, columns, and skylights – which needed to be considered in the kitchen design. The island was positioned facing a wall, which didn\u2019t work for the client\u2019s needs. They wanted a more social space where they could engage with their children and guests. \u201d<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Layout and Functionality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The kitchen layout was redesigned for efficiency and to flow naturally with the surrounding zones. Sandra recalls, \u201cWhen I looked at the space, I started to form the concept in my mind. I noticed the beams, columns, and windows and realised that the island needed to be rotated to better integrate with the space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally situated in the centre of the open-plan space, the island was moved to create a more efficient and versatile layout. Featuring L-shaped seating at one end and a prep sink at the other, it now serves as the central hub for informal family meals and activities, providing views of the garden that strengthen the connection between indoors and out. \u201cEvery aspect of the layout was tailored to fit the client’s lifestyle,\u201d Sandra continues. The seating area under the beautiful skylight offers a cosy atmosphere for relaxed family gatherings. At the same time, the formal dining room has been transformed into a luxurious yet intimate setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The previously undefined third space adjacent to the formal dining room has been turned into a social snug area. This space, bridging the kitchen and the garden, presented a unique design challenge due to its multifunctional nature. Initially, the flow between these areas felt disconnected. Sandra recalls, “Sitting at the dining table, I noticed the window framed a landscape-like view that deserved to be highlighted. By incorporating symmetrically designed display units with wine bins on either side, we created a sophisticated feature that seamlessly connects the dining area to the outdoors, while maintaining an open and visually pleasing design.<\/p>\n\n\n

Designing the Dream Kitchen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Practical storage solutions were seamlessly woven into the kitchen design. A compact baking pantry beside the banked appliances was tailored to the client\u2019s love for family baking. Additionally, a large bi-fold glazed dresser, positioned against the wall opposite the main cabinetry, elegantly unifies the space and showcases the client\u2019s cherished dishware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sandra explains, \u201cThe client had a beautiful William Morris wallpaper with green leaves, terracotta, and hints of gold that they wanted to incorporate into the space. We used Tudor Oak for the island, Avocado green for the cabinetry, and brass handles to complement this gorgeous palette.\u201d This combination resulted in a luxurious yet welcoming atmosphere that flows seamlessly throughout the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Family Life Transformed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This kitchen transformation has profoundly enriched the family’s daily life. The central gathering area has become a vibrant hub for everyday meals and activities, while the formal dining room and bar area now provide a sophisticated setting for social events. Sandra adds, \u201cThe design process is a journey that the client and designer take together. As we worked through the project, we built a relationship, allowing us to tailor the kitchen to the client’s personality, family and lifestyle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe final result is a testament to the power of collaboration and thoughtful design,\u201d reflects Sandra. \u201cIt’s a space that the family can enjoy not only for one day but for every day, whether they’re gathering for a meal or hosting a special occasion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
